I had asked three times already, but I just couldn’t give up. “Señor B_, we would love to have you and your family over for dinner.” Before I could finish the question, Señor B had already anticipated and accepted my invitation and replied with an invitation of his own. He would not only join us for dinner, but he wanted to take me to a soccer game.
The very next day, Señor B and I cleared our schedules and watched the two top leading soccer teams in Peru fight over first place. The game was great, the fans were crazy and I got an excellent taste of Arequipeño culture! Señor B and I spent almost 8 hours together and began (what I pray) will be the beginning of a long-lasting friendship.
When we (the Gutierrezes) were transitioning out of the US a few weeks ago, people would ask us what we were looking forward to. Every time I was asked that question, I thought immediately of Señor B first, and then of many others like him who don’t know Jesus. Our team has been striving to build long-lasting friendships here in Arequipa, and soccer games, great meals and the many holidays that exist in South America all provide excellent means for us to do that.
Please pray for more opportunities like these, for perseverance and for God’s sweet grace to touch the hearts of the men and women we encounter.
